Many big-name singers and Hollywood celebrities have been known to fight for environmental causes, so it’s only natural that they own some of the most luxurious electric vehicles on the market.
As green becomes the new black, some of our favorite celebrities have taken advantage of their large paychecks to hop on the electric vehicle bandwagon, leaving as minimal carbon imprint as possible.
Let’s have a peek at what some of these A-listers drive …
Leonardo DiCaprio – Fisker Karma And Tesla Roadster
Leonardo DiCaprio has long been an environmental activist, and his well-documented passion for sustainability advocacy comes through in his production of ‘We Go Green,’ a documentary about the International Formula E electric vehicle racing.
Did you know that over 20 years ago, DiCaprio was among the first Hollywood actors to drive an electric car? He bought a Toyota Prius in 2001. He then added the Tesla Roadster to his electric fleet in 2008, which cost him a whopping $1 million.
Three years later, in 2011, he scored the very first Fisker Karma hybrid-electric sports car, a pioneering (but not very successful) plug-in sedan.
Arnold Schwarzenegger – Tesla Roadster
Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the bodybuilder turned action movie star (Conan the Barbarian, Terminator, and so many more) turned politician is extremely wealthy, and he recently purchased a Tesla Roadster to express his support for green movements. However, because the modifications did not fit his big body, he had to return it!
Robert Downey Jr. – Audi E-Tron GT
If you’re a Marvel fan, you may have seen the Audi R8 e-tron as Tony Stark’s vehicle of choice in Avengers: Endgame. This is due to the fact that Robert Downey Jr. has one! Indeed, he was able to obtain one before the official release date.
You’ll note in the Avengers movie that the e-tron has the same roar as a petrol or diesel alternative. Of course, the e-tron is as quiet as they come in real life. To evoke Stark’s raucous demeanor, the filmmakers actually added sound to the car.
Another group of celebs who are trying to be more eco-friendly and sustainable are Coldplay. The British band are currently working with the BMW Group to create the world’s first mobile, rechargeable show battery for their upcoming 2022 tour.
These batteries will provide the necessary power throughout Coldplay’s live performances by reusing over 40 batteries from old BMW i3s. This will make these concerts more sustainable and one of the greenest tours in history.
Frontman Chris Martin says the band are “proud to partner with BMW to create the world’s first tourable, rechargeable show battery – which will allow us to power our concerts almost entirely from clean, renewable energy.”
Switching to an electric vehicle is a fantastic move, especially if you travel a lot. Ed Sheeran does not own an electric vehicle (that we are aware of), but he is committed to reducing his carbon footprint in other ways.
The musician is in negotiations with Volkswagen to take an all-electric camper van on tour with him across the United Kingdom. “I want to make every show as electric as possible,” Sheeran explains.
Volkswagen recently redesigned the iconic camper van that was so popular in the 1960s and 1970s. The van is anticipated to have simple, modern styling strongly influenced by the design VW’s classic retro van from the 1950s. ID.Buzz, as it has been renamed, is set to launch this year in three different flavors.
Will.i.am – Tesla Model S
Will.i.am, best known for his work as a member of the Black Eyed Peas, raised some eyebrows when he customized his Tesla Model S. Tesla automobiles are noted for having a clean and smooth appearance with little decorations.
Will.i.am decided to transform his Model S into something that doesn’t look like a Tesla at all. His reimagined version involves suicide doors, a wider body and an overall dramatically different overall appearance. Needless to say, these modifications have elicited a range of responses.
Shakira – Tesla Model S
A hot red convertible might seem like the more appropriate vehicle for this Colombian pop star, so it’s surprising to find the more unassuming Tesla Model S among Shakira’s vehicle lineup.
Still, you can’t deny the appeal of the Model S. It’s not necessarily flashy, which could be a bonus for some celebrities, but it has loads of power and style paired with electric motors. Not to mention, you also get all-wheel drive to help you stay in control during stickier driving situations.
No matter which makes and models they’re choosing, it’s good to see more celebrities driving electric. We also applaud their efforts to make their new collaborations, films and concert tours more electric and sustainable.
